		<description>&quot;lndeed, in the course of fulfilling their core functions, the impact of unions will naturally spread well beyond the workplace into a broad range of areas within the social and/or political arena..&quot; Andrew, this is such an excellent and often overlooked point. Many have questioned the relevancy of unions in today&#039;s modern workplace. Truthfully, we do forget that the greater workplace has benefited from their collective efforts on behalf of union members. Great post!

		<description>Brad,

Wow - thank you! I have not been Stumbled Upon before, this is a first for me and I am glad that you thought the post was worthy of it.

No doubt actions of the government do have an impact upon union-management relationships. Whilst I do not believe that their is one &#039;correct&#039; approach toward industrial relations from a political perspective, at least governments should try to avoid taking sides and should try to govern in a manner which is fair to employers, unions and workers at all times.

		<description>Hi Andrew, I just Stumbled this extraordinary post because it perfectly summarizes the proper role of unions in business and society. Very well done!

&quot;It takes one to start a fight - two to have a constructive relationship.&quot;

Getting rid of the confrontation that characterizes so many union-management relationships would go miles toward improving life for everyone. It might be, though, that we need to add a third party to the equation - government. By acting, not acting, or acting on a political agenda, government quite easily can disrupt rather than nurture the union-management relationship.
