Thanks Brad/Karen,

I guess both of your comments highlight the responsibility of employees to maintain a sufficient level of physical well-being in order to perform their duties in a satisfactory manner.

This is a responsibility of the employees concerned who cannot really blame their employer for their own inability to comply with company policy.

In this case, the decision was based upon specific, objective criteria, the hostesses concerned were each more than ten kilograms overweight and were given a fair time period in order to reduce their weight.

A tough but fair decision.

Andrew, while this would rankle many US residents, in this case the firings seem fair. If weight policies are a condition of hire then you are obligated to continue to meet those conditions as part of your employment agreement. The hostesses were given opportunity to cure the issue, and did not so that seems fair to me.

Hi Andrew, The stewardesses that ended up losing their jobs could have lost weight, could they not? If they were given an opportunity to conform to the policy, which appears to be the case since they were grounded, then they themselves bear quite a bit of responsibility for what happened.
